sync contacts with social networks
It would be great if for example soocial could take pictures/birthday info from facebook contacts/add social networking links to contact profile ie linkedin/twitter.. Could be a good idea to build up a better/more indepth address book of your contacts

Personally I am more interested in LinkedIn. People on that platform maintain their contactinfo themselves, so I have always the most recent information!

Hey Chris,
that's definitely stuff we are looking in to. We are hoping to be able to add a lot of stuff in the coming months. -

Hi Bart, what'st the status on this topic? I was wondering if it's in your roadmap to add twitter accounts as an option in contacts too

I would like to see Facebook and Linked In integration to automatically update my contacts to their latest information

me too... i know that facebook doesnt expose all their info, but it would be great to sync what you can.

At the very least, it would be nice to be able to add links to individuals' public profiles to their entries.

When/if this feature is added, please, ensure that one can add it as a one-way sync point. I am not very fond of the idea to let Facebook get access to my entire address book.

good point!

I have been trying Soocial for only a few weeks and really like it, but it is clearly lascking sync and editing features.
This thread makes me wonder how fast Soocial is evolving (ie how long I should wait for more/better features) because a ten month old thread that was was supposed to be closed months ago ...isn't.
My current contacts provider (Memotoo) doesn't look as polished as Soocial, but does absolutely everything I want (including the requests on this thread and a lot of others). I am hoping that Soocial will evolve fast because I am maintaining 2 contact databases whilst I evaluate Soocial.-
Hi James,
Great to see you taking Soocial for a test drive. Two main reasons why we haven't done this yet:
1. Linked and Facebook's own TOS have been very restrictive.
2. The nature of the people in your social network is different from those in your address book. Thus we have needed to offer filtering capabilities first, we decided to create this as a possibility for all devices and connections not just make it static for LinkedIn or Facebook. Memetoo has done this (IIRC) but cannot verify right now.
In other words: we are working on it but we want it to be "legal" (that is: not in breach of the TOS) and secondly users shouldn't lose control or be overwhelmed with FB friends in their normal address book - thus the extra tools. -

OK, that all makes sense, but what's your time-line (do you need beta testers)?

At this point it will be months, not weeks James. I think Stefan's post put the expectations a bit too high.

Regarding "We will be finishing off the filtering first (in the next 2 weeks) one last small issue remains (FYI auto adding groups to contacts that come from a particular source). "
When will it actually be finished? Is it possible to auto add groups to contacts that come from a particular source? -

Well, I have managed it a longer way around, but it requires a Yahoo account. As it turns out, Yahoo will import contacts from Facebook, then all you need to do is sync to your Yahoo account. Long winded, but it does get the job done, until Soocial has native Facebook support.
If you use Yahoo instant messenger, you will also likely want to use filters to block all the IM only contacts from any other accounts.- view 1 more comment

Thanks for the feedback! ;)
It netted me about a dozen extra contacts. I'm not quite sure what side effects this has (because many of my Facebook contacts are derived from Gmail, which is synced to Yahoo!). :) Any future attempts will be preceeded by a full backup. Hopefully by that time, Soocial will be able to talk to Facebook directly. -

I've been doing this for maybe 3 months myself, but the only problem is that it will not sync over phone numbers, birthdays, websites, only email addresses. At least it's better than nothing. Also, it's quite disappointing that this is only available through yahoo, and not hotmail or gmail.

I'm impatient to see this feature :)
Do you have any idea of the go live date ?-
Not at all Yann.

> Do you have any idea of the go live date ?
Personally, as someone who's used a lot of software and services for 10+ years, I prefer companies who simply don't say when or what they're doing. I know it seems counter-intuitive from a customer standpoint, but software development is subject to many twists, turns and roadblocks. I've literally seen projects come off the wheels from over-promising and then suffering under the weight of the negative "you said we'd have this by now" feedback, examples of which can be seen in this thread.
This is why many developers announce something only at the time it's available and never give estimated dates. Google for example. I'm on board with that. I don't want to hear about it until I can have it. Even knowing something is on the drawing board creates expectations and clamoring for dates. I'd rather the coders and support people stay busy actually creating stuff than answering questions about when and if something will be ready.
I know others will disagree, and that's ok, but I think promising timelines for feature/functionality rollout is a slippery slope for any software developer unless they're damn sure they can keep the promise.-
I agree.

For those of you missing information about your contacts, here's another neat little trick. Start an act over at gist.com (if you're on Google's Web hosted domains, there is even a web app). Gist will look for twitter acts, email addresses, birthdays, websites, etc. It's a great way to get more information about your contacts than you already have. If you connect through twitter, you might need to remove some of the "fan" users you follow. Then, you can tag to match groups on soocial. Now, export the vcf for the contacts and then import into soocial.com. Finally, use soocial.com's deduper feature to clean up the duplicates. Presto. Now contacts where you only had email addresses, you now have a lot more social information, which would then, in turn, be sync'ed to your phone.
In all honesty, this is a hack that just works similar to Mozilla's Alpha Contacts project, expect unlike that project, this lets you get the data to your phone.
Keep in mind, though, that this will be slightly time consuming (took me most of the morning to go through approximately 700+ contacts.
Between this and the Yahoo sync, I hope this helps everyone get by until a more formal solution is implemented.
By-the-by, it would be incredibly helpful to grab social networking URLs if soocial were to call a site such as Dandyid.com where users put all their URLs into one centralized location. Rather than reinvent the wheel, wouldn't this add to soocial's usefulness. Just a thought.

Wow! Thanks for that input. You are a real Techno Mensch. ;-)

I recently discovered that Microsoft's Hotmail/Live Contacts has taken this concept one step further. They actually offer one part of the holy grail of synchronization, integrating their address book with my Facebook friends. It imports not just their names and emails, but also phone numbers, birthdays, address, place of employment, basically anything that someone has made available on their profiles.
I now am waiting for the ever slow synchronization between Soocial and Hotmail to complete. Then I'll be importing my GIST list again because they were able to find all sort of goodies, like Delicious, Flikr, friendfeed, YouTube, and more URL profiles for everyone.
But what none of them tell me is whether I'm connected to them at any of those social networking sites. Just gives me the URLs.

technomensch, I think you are mistaken. I have just hooked up my Windows Live to Facebook. I don't think Facebook did bring in any phone numbers or e-mail addresses that I didn't have in Live already. It does get birthdays, company's, city's and a bunch of other stuff.

Just tried this. The email address is at least accessible in the Hotmail/Live-interface to act on (compose mail, etc.). But that is of course not the same as the Live service exposing it to the API you are using.
But I cannot really figure out if those contacts are synced at all from Hotmail/Live to Soocial. At least they do not in the first sync after they are "linked" into LIve.
If it worked it would be a great addition to the setup, even though direct integration from Soocial to LinkedIn and Facebook would be even better. :-) -
-
I kind of like the way Hotmail handles it. If you connect your MS Live account to Facebook and LinkedIn, and then view a contact, it shows the information from both services. The only problem is that it doesn't modify the PIM data. If the service not only showed what each service offers, but lets us choose field by field (say all Address and Phone from Facebook, all Company and Position from LinkedIn for example), or manually choose the fields contact by contact, that would be the best way to implement it as well as giving us more control over it

Hi Bart (or any other Official Rep), any progress on this idea?
I'm also curious to how you'll be supporting this, because in the end, I would like to stay in control of all my contact data. And since LinkedIn/Facebook contacts are likely to be synchronised in 1 direction (towards Soocial only?), I expect some sort of 'merge updates' possibility.
In what direction is this 'idea' heading? -
-
Sjors,
it is still high on the list of things we want to make. It would most likely be a on way import allowing you to enrich your data on Soocial. Still no ETA. -
-
Is there any changelog and plan for the future updates ?
Sorry about that, but I have the feeling, there was no update since a while !-
We don't have any public change log available. And you are right you probably have not seen a lot of changes. Most of the work we have been doing over the last months has been on the backend.

Damn, status still 'Under considuration'. When will it change to 'Comming soon!' ?
If you would like to 'force' users to switch to a paid version of Soocial, add support for LinkedIn/Facebook (one way) sync. Most of us will soon need to have more then 250 contacts and might consider upgrading. -
-
2 years... lol
It will be the 1st killer feature of Soocial, but still "under consideration" or maybe "just stfu :p" -
-
Oh! Come on!!!
2 years past and still "under consideration"?
2 years is a lot of time for just CONSIDERING! -
